dc.description.abstractThis research explored the influence mechanism of loneliness, mental health, and academic performance in Chinese college students, as well as ways to buffer this mechanism. The mechanism and its three mediators were explored using structural equation modeling (SEM). The interview was used to obtain data about the mechanism and to provide strategies for overcoming it. The SEM results, theories, previous research, and interview data revealed the mechanism. According to the findings, AQ (resilience and optimism) could reduce the influence of loneliness on mental health. Mental health could increase the influence of self-directed learning on academic performance. The interview results indicated that self-comfort and seeking assistance from others were two effective strategies for mitigating the mechanism. To promote adaptation for selfdirected learning in students, this study recommended that Chinese universities foster students’ AQ and mental health to lower the influence of the mechanism. Counselors at Chinese colleges were recommended to assist relevant students in overcoming the mechanism using techniques, e.g. self-comfort and asking for help from others.en_US
