This research aimed to study the conditions for success of the three excellent schools and to propose a model for the development of excellent schools in Tunan, China. It adopted a mixed-methods approach, collecting both quantitative as well as qualitative data. A sample group of 392 teachers of the three schools filled out the 45 items in the questionnaire, and the three school principles were invited to semistructured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed by factor analysis employing both exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Qualitative interview data were analyzed by Grounded Theory, using Constant Comparison Technique. The questionnaire data analysis revealed eight aspects that shaped a learning organization: 1) Policies and goals, 2) Supportive environment, 3) Professional development, 4) Collaboration, 5) Strategies to adapt to changes, 6) Leadership, 7) Sharing vision, and 8) Information technology. These two perspectives from the teachers and the principals were similar in addressing policies and goals and supportive environment, information technology.
