Abstract: | The objectives of this study were 1) to investigate Chinese high school students’ perceptions toward online English learning, and 2) to explore the challenges and opportunities of Chinese high school teachers in online English teaching through difficult times. This research employed both quantitative and qualitative methods. The research samples consisted of 404 students and 10 teachers from Anshun No.1 High School, Guizhou Province, China. The research instruments included a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. Descriptive statistics were utilized to analyze data. The findings showed that, in terms of students’ perceptions, the highest mean was displayed by “teaching professionalism”. On the other hand, the biggest challenge for teachers encountered was “online learning efficiency was not as good as onsite learning”, and the best opportunity was “teachers used blended teaching method to guide students”. This study recommended that teachers should investigate students’ perceptions toward online learning in a variety of subjects. Moreover, this research provide a practical reference for Chinese high schools to implement online teaching and learning activities during the epidemic |
