dc.description.other-abstractThis research pursued two primary objectives: (1) a comprehensive analysis of the narrative structure within Chen Kaige's filmography, and (2) an examination of the cinematic language employed by the director. The data for this study comprised three feature films: My People, My Country, The Battle at Lake Changjin, and The Battle at Lake Changjin II. The films were selected based on their thematic and stylistic diversity, reflecting key phases in Chen Kaige’s directing career. Data collection instruments employed in this research included in-depth filmographic analysis, cinematic language, narrative analysis and theoretical frameworks from film studies. The findings of this research were as follows: 1) Chen Kaige utilizes complex narrative techniques such as nonlinear and linear structures to enrich the artistic dimensions of his cinematic works, and 2) his film language is both rich and unique, utilizing meticulous color schemes, lighting, camera movements, and sound effects to enhance the visual impact and convey deep cultural and emotional themes. Potential areas for further research include exploring the cross-cultural elements in Chen Kaige’s films and examining the impact of technological innovations on his narrative structures and visual language.en_US
