metadata.dc.description.other-abstract: This study aimed to compare the English reading skills of Grade 7 Chinese students before and after using video clips, and to examine their satisfaction toward the use of video clips. The study employed cluster random sampling of 40 Grade 7 students from two classes in Yunnan Province, China, with mixed gender and learning abilities. Quantitative data were collected using an English reading skills test (pre-test and post-test) and a students’ satisfaction questionnaire. The data were analyzed using a paired-sample t-test for the first research objective, and descriptive statistics, including mean (x̄) and standard deviation (S.D.), as well as thematic analysis for the second objective. The results showed that students improved their English reading skills, with the post-test scores (x̄ = 14.93, S.D. = 1.54) higher than the pre-test scores (x̄ = 9.98, S.D. = 1.67), resulting in a mean difference of 4.95 points. In addition, the students’ satisfaction data indicated that all items were rated at a high level, reflecting positive attitudes toward the use of video clips in learning English reading. The mean scores were as follows: Part A = 3.88 (S.D. = 0.87), Part B = 3.73 (S.D. = 0.93), and Part C = 3.83 (S.D. = 0.92), with an overall mean score of 3.81, which was at a high level. The findings suggest that using video clips in English reading classes is an effective approach to improving students’ reading skills and enhancing their satisfaction.
