dc.description.other-abstract | The Maldives is experiencing a rise in non-violent and violent forms of Islamic radicalization as well as the task of dealing with returning Jihadists. This thesis aims to study selected causal factors of radicalization to understand and analyze how these factors contribute to the rise of Islamic radicalization in the Maldives. The findings of this study points out that in the Maldives at the locus of this process of Islamic radicalization can be identified an aggrieved individual or group seeking justice/vengeance/redemption etc, in the framework of an Islamic identity. Despite the temporal origins of radicalization in the Maldives, problems linked to religious thoughts and divides are observed to have increased since the establishment of democratic practices in 2005. Today, on top of the existing societal problems such as unemployment, housing crisis, drug problem, gang culture and others, the Maldives is also faced with proliferation of diverging religious narratives and heavy political instrumentalization of Islam causing societal divides that have fueled disenfranchisement and disillusionment in vulnerable individuals. The dangerous mix of grievances and perceived injustices have created a space for radical elements to capitalize on the grievances of vulnerable individuals and mobilize them for violent activities | en_US |
