metadata.dc.description.other-abstract: This study examined the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on the participation of undergraduate students majoring in music performance in chorus classes across Chengdu universities. Drawing on Self-Determination Theory, the research explored how personal interests, goals, and external influences such as recognition and rewards contributed to students' engagement in chorus activities. A mixed-methods approach, combining surveys and interviews with a sample of 339 students, was employed to analyze the influences of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on class participation. The findings revealed that while the intrinsic motivation, particularly, with a passion for music and a desire for self-improvement significantly influenced students’ active involvement in chorus singing, the extrinsic factors, such as teacher feedback and performance opportunities, significantly influenced students’ participation in chorus classes. The study underscored the importance of fostering both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in choral education to enhance student engagement and optimize learning outcomes. In addition, the insights gained from this research offered guidelines and practical implications gained from administrators in Chorus Program for improving Choral Education and participation strategies in Chengdu universities
