metadata.dc.description.other-abstract: This quantitative study aimed to compare fingerprint ridge density in the Thai population in order to develop a guideline for personal identification through sex determination. Data were collected from 100 volunteer participants aged between 18 and 25 years, consisting of 50 males and 50 females, residing in Bangkok and its metropolitan area. The results revealed that females had a significantly higher mean ridge density than males. Fingerprints with a ridge density of less than or equal to 14 ridges per 25 square millimeters were more likely to belong to males, whereas fingerprints with a ridge density greater than 15 ridges per 25 square millimeters were more likely to belong to females. These findings are consistent with previous studies conducted in other countries. In conclusion, fingerprint ridge density can serve as an additional parameter for the preliminary prediction or determination of an individual’s sex. This knowledge has potential applications in forensic science, particularly in sex determination from latent fingerprints recovered at crime scenes, as well as in personal identification during mass disasters or other situations in which the identification of sex cannot be achieved through conventional methods.
